About the Church of the Essence
Four decades of ceremony, education, and community service rooted in Nevada City, California.
Our Founding Story
In 1979, Faith Harvard and Judy Phillips founded the Church of the Essence in Nevada City, California. What began as a small gathering of seekers committed to authentic spiritual practice has grown into an established institution serving multiple generations.
From its inception, the Church has held a clear intention: to provide legitimate, grounded ceremonial services while training the next generation of spiritual leaders. This dual commitment to service and education has remained at the heart of our work for over four decades.
Through changing times, we have maintained our focus on what matters most— preserving sacred traditions, supporting individuals through life's transitions, and building genuine community rooted in shared values and practice.
Decades of Community Service
Over more than forty years, Church of the Essence ministers have performed countless ceremonies, counseled individuals through life challenges, trained spiritual practitioners, and maintained lineage-based traditions with care and integrity.
